12 Resolutions to Avoid Being the Creepy Referral Guy in 2025

Make and keep these following resolutions and you’ll avoid looking like The Creepy Referral Guy in 2025.

No begging, pushing, or other creepy referral behavior allowed!

  1. Commit to growing your business in the manner your best clients would prefer to meet you – an introduction from someone they already trust.

  2. Make great connections for others. Turn the referrals you provide into effective introductions. Demonstrate the best way to make connections.

  3. When you talk about what makes you differenttie that differentiation into a clear benefit. Only differences that matter, matter.

  4. Develop and use a Client Engagement Plan. Segment your clients, create a checklist, and respect the checklist.

  5. Teach the clients you want to replicate who you serve the best, and how to recognize someone who might benefit from your council.

  6. Don’t take on clients who don’t fit your business. Don’t create lose-lose situations.

  7. Create value discussions or expectation checks with prospects and clients to make sure expectations are in line, and that they recognize the value you’ve delivered with your process.

  8. When asking for possible introductions, don’t throw out the entire universe for your clients to consider. Come prepared with specific people you know that they know and/or categories of folks you tend to serve well.

  9. Don’t settle for word of mouth or ineffective referrals. Turn referrals into introductions.

  10. Keep your introducer in the loop. Let them know how the introduction progresses and let them know if you have trouble connecting with your new prospect.

  11. Don’t let introductions fall through the cracks. Respond quickly. They will appreciate your responsiveness.

  12. Have a plan in place for identifying and meeting quality centers of influence. Make sure your COIs understand your value before asking them for introductions. You must become referable first.
